I have so often had a vague irritation when reading about Emma putting Mr. Martin down for his reading tastes...now, thanks to you nan duval, it dawns on me why that strikes me so ill! Emma, critiqueing someone else's reading tastes? When she cannot even bring herself to finish her own list, let alone help Harriet to read more extensively?! She would rather gossip and dream than read, any day of the week...yet holds Mr. Martin up to criticism on the reading issue!! Oh dear, no wonder this segment always left me feeling discontented with Emma's stance!!
