Second-hand furniture and the like?   Written by Tracy W (4/3/2008 11:13 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Help with setting up her business?, penned by JulieW
Are you new?

It occurrs to me that Mr Woodhouse could have supplied Mrs Goddard with second-hand furniture - say if he brought a new piano for his daughters and Miss Taylor, the old one might be sent to Mrs Goddard for her school, or sending her an old table or old chairs.

And of course, if Mr Woodhouse had loaned Mrs Goddard's school some money, or leased the school to her, he would have a financial interest in making sure the school was a success, increasing the chances of him giving other gifts to help the school out.

I am inclined to think that Mr Woodhouse must have been more active and more accepting of new things at some point in the past. I am having a hard time imaginging the Mr Woodhouse we hear in chapter 1 ever consenting to get married himself, but from the existance of Emma we know he must have.
