Impressions of a first time reader....   Written by Hanné B (4/3/2008 8:13 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, First Impressions, penned by Tarn
Are you new?

This is my first time reading Emma, and I must say, I feel great excitement while reading the novel and cannot seem to put it down.

At present, I must admit to not liking Emma very much, however I believe that she has a lot to learn, and that if she does, it would be a triumph indeed, and her character could become very likeable. I like Mr Knightley a great deal, it seems as if he is someone with great sense and the ability to see a situation in perspective. I find DOMW intriguing and amusing, and his eccentriccities quite funny! :)

In Chapter 6 where Harriet's portrait is done, I feel frustration all the time about the fact that Mr Elton keeps praising the portrait for more than it is worth, as I can imagine. I rather doubt that Emma's artworks were as brilliant as she makes them out to be...maybe she was good, but surely not the way Mr Elton was ranting on about? :) In any case, the setting of the novel is very likable to my mind, and thus far, I am enjoying every moment!
