Irony   Written by Joan Ellen (4/2/2008 12:14 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ch. 4 Emma's intrigue about Harriet..., penned by Moni
Are you new?

Her first attempts at usefulness were in an endeavour to find out who were the parents...

I think JA is having a little snicker here at Emma's expense, because this hardly seems the best way, or even a proper way, of trying to be 'useful' to Harriet. IMO, it's highly impertinent of Emma to ask such a question -- rather Lady-Catherinish, in fact!

I doubt Harriet is lying when she says she doesn't know. Mrs. Goddard may know, but then again, the necessary business may all be handled through a third party (such as a lawyer) and Mrs. Goddard might be equally in the dark. Either way, it seems clear that if the parents wanted Harriet to know who they were, she would have been told long ago.
