It is clear that Mr Perry's role in Mr Woodhouse's life is partly social, to give him peace of mind.

However, I do not see how confirming that wedding cake is not completely healthy is soothing to Mr Woodhouse. On the contrary, wouldn't it rather agitate Mr W more to know that all his aquaintance were eating something unhealthy? If Mr Perry had said that there was nothing at all wrong with eating wedding cake, I imagine Mr Woodhouse would not be so distressed, even if he had expected the opposite.
