How long was this wedding cake around?   Written by Joan Ellen (4/1/2008 12:19 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ch, 2 Wedding Cake rumour..., penned by Moni
Are you new?

a few weeks brought some alleviation to Mr. Woodhouse. The compliments of his neighbours were over; he was no longer teased by being wished joy of so sorrowful an event; and the wedding-cake, which had been a great distress to him, was all eat up.

I've often wondered if this passage means that people were still eating this wedding cake for weeks after the wedding. The wording makes the time frame here somewhat ambiguous, but it does seem to imply that it's around for quite a while. Wouldn't it be awfully stale after a day or two? And even starting to get, well, a bit moldy after a longer period?

Yikes, maybe it really was unwholesome! ;-)
