I was reading the first chapter, and I decided to do a little math. (It was very hard to attempt. =) ) I figured that Emma was 14 years old when she became mistress of the house. Isabella was married seven years ago, and Emma is now 21. Wow! That's very young to take charge of things. But I suppose since people would marry at 14 or younger, it wasn't quite such a big deal back then.
