She could have been using the term ironically, I think.

So either way I have to think this guy is manipulative.

By the way, I'm not sure the Johnson dictionary 1828 edition is always accurate for JA. It seems like it was updated, but not, obviously, by Dr. Johnson. So it may at times be a little too "modern" for both Johnson and JA.
