There is no mention of Mr. Elton having any family or parents either, I don't think. As Emma plans for him and Harriet, there is no idea that there would be anyone but himself to consult--no thought of their being family objections or approval, of his expecting to have anything done for him like waiting for an inheritance of his own, etc.

That did strike me especially about Miss Taylor/Mrs. Weston, for she could not have been older than her late teens/early 20s when she came to the Woodhouses. She was very lucky to end up in a situation where she was treated like one of the family.
