The Westons -- the affable, open Westons -- are concealing their plans. Emmma humours her father by concealing things from him. So even in relationships of love and trust (the Westons with good friends like Mr K, Emma and DOMW) we see deception.

It's part of life. The question -- and I think it's a central question in this novel -- is, to what degree, and with what intentions.
