...in her attitude towards Mr Martin is supposed to show us how malleable Harriet is generally, and how eager she is to please Emma.

One can hardly blame the poor girl, going from being an illegitimate boarder to the protegée of the local Lady Bountiful. Emma must have seemed unspeakably glamorous to her. If Mrs Martin's "two parlours, two very good parlours indeed; one of them quite as large as Mrs. Goddard's drawing-room" represented a big step up for her, imagine Hartfield...!
