This description of Mr Martin's herd, shows us that the Abbey Farm is no small concern - he can afford rich pasture (milking cows need good grass and lots of it) for eight cows.


Also, as they only have one Welch cow, Harriet's doppelganger might have been a poddy calf (now heifer)- very affectionate towards human beings because she had been abandoned (or taken) from her mother and bottle fed by humans. If she were still young, she would be small compared to the other cattle.
