A bit too harsh on Emma, perhaps   Written by Ramya (3/30/2008 6:09 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Mr Woodhouse's motive, penned by Nicki
Are you new?

Emma is a snob, and does have a high opinion of herself, but I don't see her manipulating anyone so far, except her own father and Harriet. But even to Harriet, she is not condescending in a Lady-Catherinish way. She is a really good hostess, even if she feels the highbury ladies who visit her father to be a bit boring.

However, Mr.Wodehouse's inability to think others might feel differently from himself stems from selfishness and self-centeredness, IMHO, and not all from benovelent motives.
