in consequence of the missive, Chapter 1 -- Emma's situation, penned by Joan Ellen
...(Mr. Woodhouse, Harriet, even Mr. Elton in a sense) has no one who really takes care of her. Because of her father's indulgent indolence, Emma is unchecked but also largely alone and needs someone to take care of her (not necessarily a mentor, but at least a partner).
