That's a very interesting passage you quoted. I've often thought that Austen was showing us that Mr. Weston was extremely practical at heart. He wasn't about to keep his son from having all those advantages, especially when he would be better off if he could simply look after himself for the next two decades.

For all that he's a good guy, Mr. Weston is also very much a realist when in comes ot money, isn't he?
