Want to see a couple?   Written by JulieW (3/30/2008 11:43 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Harriet the Cow, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

A pair of pretty Welch cows, that is?

This portrait of Bethnal and Bran was painted in 1824 by Daniel Clowes, and comes fromFarm Animal Portraits by Elspeth Moncrieff , who notes about the breed and the protrait:

Welsh cattle were extremely varied and the Welsh Cattle Society as not formed until 1883. The breed combined milking ability, beef quality and hardiness to survive in inhospitable environs. Sir Robert Vaughn for whom these were painted, specialised in a dairy strain and a milkman with his churn appears in the background

Again the stock Mr Martin has on his farm is an indicator of the type of sensible , professional farmer he is: JA gives us clues as to his competence. The Welch cow is a good all rounder, and a good dairy breed.
