Because the absolute truth is that Harriet is exactly of Mr. Martin's class. She went to school with his sisters. If Mr. Martin is not a "real gentleman," Harriet is not a "real gentlewoman" -- but Emma doesn't see it that way because she doesn't want to. The truth is that they are equally genteel, or that Mr. Martin is decidedly moreso, because he wasn't "placed" at a school and left to be raised by its mistress.
