Indeed, Harriet must have felt quite bad   Written by Hanné B (3/30/2008 8:08 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Poor Mr. Martin, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

"To be sure," said Harriet, in a mortified voice, "he is not so genteel as real gentlemen." (Chapter 4)

I can feel Harriet's sense of disappointment and embarrasmment she experiences after the meeting with Mr. Martin. She had thought him a kind and good humoured fellow, and seemed rather excited when she ran back towards Emma to tell her the news. Emma manages to give a definite blow to any glimmering admiration of Harriet's for Mr. Martin.

Of course, this would all be part of Emma's grand scheme, but it seems she has no regard for the feelings of either Miss Smith nor Mr. Martin.
