Harriet the Cow   Written by Robbin (3/30/2008 3:40 a.m.)
Are you new?

She was a very pretty girl, and her beauty happened to be of a sort which Emma particularly admired. She was short, plump and fair, with a fine bloom, blue eyes, light hair, regular features, and a look of great sweetness; and before the end of the evening, Emma was as much pleased with her manners as her person, and quite determined to continue the acquaintance. (Chapter 3)

Emma is happily able to make up a card table for her farther almost any day of the week (Chapter 3) from among their eight intimate friends, those who are willing to visit Mr. Woodhouse on his terms—namely at his home. Friends of the first order—Mr. & Mrs. Weston, Mr. Knightley, and Mr. Elton and then friends of the second set—Mrs. Bates, Miss Bates and Mrs. Goddard who “are almost always at the service of an invitation from Hartfield” and lastly—Miss Smith. Emma’s delight in Harriet, especially in her beauty of the sort she particularly admired, reminded me a great deal of Harriet’s delight in a certain bovine:

…and of their having eight cows, two of them Alderneys, and one a little Welch cow, a very pretty little Welch cow, indeed; and of Mrs. Martin's saying, as she was so fond of it, it should be called her cow… (Chapter 4)

IMO Harriet is Emma’s pretty little Welch cow! (;D)

…and since Mrs. Weston's marriage her exercise had been too much confined. She had ventured once alone to Randalls, but it was not pleasant; and a Harriet Smith, therefore, one whom she could summon at any time to a walk, would be a valuable addition to her privileges. (Chapter 4)

Emma also considers Harriet at her service as a walking partner much like Mrs. Bates, Miss Bates and Mrs. Goddard are almost always available for cards at Hartfield. I wonder if the two Alderneys might refer to the two bachelors, the two Westons or the two Bates? I think perhaps to Mrs. Bates and Miss Bates because of course, from Johnson’s Dictionary, 1828, Cow: Female of the bull. (:D)
