Harriet's secret parentage may be a sly reference... Written by Anne-Marie (3/18/2011 10:45 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, How much of the Prince is in "Emma"?, penned by Bridget D

Emma thinks that Harriet's father might be a gentleman who has conveniently tucked his illegitimate daughter away in a school in a quiet country town away from the city. I think the readers of JA's time would draw the inference that maybe Harriet was the child of a royal mistress, or at least that Emma suspects she is.
