To answer that, I look at the last paragraph of Ch 55...   Written by jeffrey (3/18/2011 8:39 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, That's a lovely projection, but...., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

Our Miss Austen portrays a final "put-down" of Mrs. Elton regarding the marriage, with only her dissenting on one side and EVERYONE else on the other side with Emma and Mr. Knightley. I think with this final snub, Highbury shows where their heart belongs.

I only see Mrs. Elton as a distant second around Highbury because of her deficiencies of character that do not show any self-remedy.

Emma, I think, has all but overcome her deficiencies and will be pre-eminent in esteem among the citizens of Highbury.

How else could an incurable romantic see it? (chuckles smugly to himself)
