I think that he coudl harldy have spent extra time with Jane without "using" soemeone.. (albeit I think it was bad of him to flirt so mcuh with Emma who MIGHT have fallen in love with him)... but he had to have someone's hlep plannign the ball.. and the person most likely was Emma. and unless he took to visiting the Bateses a LOT adn saying that he had discovered in himself soem kind of charity vocation, it would be diffcult for him to get a litlte time iwth Jane..
