In a letter one is spared the questions that could follow, like 'How did you find out.' 'What did he say?'

I don't think saying 'There's another woman,' would be helpful because there are no eligible women in sight. Jane's engaged. It would leave just Emma.

As for spreading any rumours even if Emma had told her the truth, would have been avoided because she went off to London.
