in consequence of the missive, About Jane, penned by SusanH
The latter part of Ch 52 perhaps sheds some light on the REAL Jane Fairfax:
".... "Oh!" cried Jane, with a blush and an hesitation which Emma thought infinitely more becoming to her than all the elegance of all her usual composure -- "there would have been no danger...."
Although Emma and Jane finally get a chance to exchange confidences here, I really think Jane, unmasked from her secret engagement, is a lot more open and lively than previously portrayed. I think her reserve and coldness was a defense mechanism to deflect suspicion about her secret relationship with Frank Churchill.
Do you think that Emma and Jane could become much better friends following their marriages? (mentally projecting beyond the end of the story again) From this dialogue in Ch 52, I would like to think so because I have always wished for reconciliation in strained relationships.
