but some of the wits, since they were so small and impractical, dubbed them ridicules and the terms became interchangable. They were basically externalsed and decorated versions of pockets, which at the time were not sewn in to womens' clothes but were bags fastened round the waist over the undergarments and accessed by a slit sewn into the gown.
