ever thought that Harriet could be a nobleman's daughter. And indeed we have found out in this week's final chapter that she isn't. I don't say Mr Churchill would never have given way if she had been Frank's choice, but I do say that he probably would not have given way as quickly and easily as he does in Jane's case. Frank had arguments to advance in Jane's favour which simply don't exist in Harriet's. So Emma's thought that Mr C would have done as much for Harriet as for Jane was indeed wrong, and Emma would no doubt acknowledge that herself now, to judge from her reflections on Harriet in the last chapter.
