... both Darcy and Wentworth were from out of the neighborhood, and had only to stay away to make their determination easier. Mr. Knightley would have had no such -- advantage?

But even with them I read their "ultimatums" as "reassurances". They were aware that a proposal of marriage to an unwilling woman would be at best uncomfortable, and were (to my mind) offering assurance that they would no longer be troubling the object of their affection if that affection were not returned.
