Bear in mind that we're seeing Frank under severe disadvantage -- disadvantage enough that even Jane, completely devoted as she was, was convinced that he was too shallow to continue their relationship.

And, yes, I have as little regard for him as does Mr.Knightley. And as high hopes that he can be salvaged by such a wife as Jane.
