well yes we know she's illegitimate and not very clever but does that mean that Mr K can be as disparaging about her as he seems to be in the early chapters? In saying that her freinds/family left her to "Mrs Goddard's set", ie to be a part of the "second rate" of Highbury for ever and not have any chance of rising out of it.
