Indeed, this is a common thread...   Written by gianni (3/9/2011 11:03 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, [paired] on a more perfect plan, penned by Stephanie
Are you new?

...in Austen's writings.

Reserved, quiet Jane -- open, confident, friendly Churchill.
Reserved, quiet Knightley -- open, confident Emma.
Reserved, introverted Darcy -- open, friendly Lizzy.
Reserved, introverted Darcy -- open, confident, friendly Bingley.
Innocent, quiet Catherine -- open, confident Tilney.
Reserved, quiet Brandon -- open, gushy Marianne.
Reserved, quiet Anne -- open, confident Frederick.

Even the oddball Darcy-Bingley friendship follows the pattern, although I acknowledge that my opinion that Darcy was the dependent, depending upon Bingley's social skills to cover his own social incompetence, is not shared by many.

Sorry, I only made it through Mansfield Park once, and I can't remember any such clear parallels at the moment. And I'm sure that further thought would show other examples.
