... as no-one would have been made the least bit happier by her sacrifice. In fact, it would have resulted in 3, possibly 4 people being thoroughly miserable for at least the next 20 years, if not the eternal hereafter.

Of course, this quietly by-passes the issues that actually do arise around Harriet and Emma's inequalities of situation in life. While they may both fancy Mr K, only Emma is in the social position to attract him - and Emma sees it as her right to be Mr K's wife and that Harriet is usurping.
