would have said if Emma had tried to make him transfer his affections to Harriet. I can't imagine he would have been at all receptive to the idea, in fact he might have become pretty annoyed. However Emma worded it, it would have boiled down to "No, I don't want you myself but can I pass you on to my friend? She's a nicer person than me anyway.", which is not what a man who has just poured out his heart would want to hear. The whole interview might have degenerated into a ding-dong row. A flat refusal without reason he must of course have accepted, and if it was made politely would not have questioned it. Then he would have gone away and seen as little as possible of Emma thereafter. It is a very fortunate thing that Emma lacks heroism of sentiment, because had she possessed it the story would have taken a rather depressing turn at this point.
