It was never Mr. Knightley's intention to mislead either Jane or Harriet. While Jane seems to have been unaffected (her heart was already engaged elsewhere), poor Harriet fell for him. I have always felt that the gossip about Jane and Mr. Knightley must have reached the former, since it was not a fantasy concocted just by Mrs. Weston- Mr. Cole had come to the same conclusion. It is not difficult to imagine that through the Coles, this particular speculation had spread around Highbury (hence Jane not wanting to accept apples from Mr. Knightley's orchard, and even perhaps, her increase in reserve to him). |
