to say that Mr Knightley was actually encouraging Harriet.

It was unconciously done because his actual motives were very different, like Emma's motive too was different.

That Mr Knightley failed to notice any signs of regard for him is what makes me feel that he seems not to have had much experience.

I can picture Harriet with her heart in her eyes looking at him while he talked away.....about Robert Martin. LOL!

Of course he was only being courteous as far as Jane Fairfax was concerned, but people did talk about them, like they did for Emma and Mr Elton.
