My original focus in this group read was on shifting identities and social standings, and viewed from that perspective, a Jane-Frank match makes sense. Both have been reared away from their birth families and have grown up with more money and advantages than they might otherwise have done. Imagine what a sad, impoverished life Jane would have had if not for the Campbells, who even though they could not provide for a dowry, were able to educate her and show her more of the world than she would have seen while living with Mrs. and Miss Bates. Frank might have fared all right with Mr. Weston, but I wonder whether Mr. Weston might have remarried earlier if he had a young son to rear on his own.
I confess that I have never understood why Jane consented to the secret engagement, especially since she was letting the rest of the world think that she had decided it was time to get a position as a governess. I wonder if in a way she was trying to force Frank's hand and get him to admit the truth to the Churchills? Mrs. Churchill's death certainly came at an opportune time for them. I wonder how long it would have taken for Frank to come clean or for Jane to give up and break the engagement.
