that Jane's increasing reserve was due to a guilty conscience. After all is revealed, her demeanor absolutely changes from what we see when she first comes to Highbury.

Thank you for supplying Jane's quote; it was the one I was thinking of that explained her initial attraction to Frank. "Constantly bewitching" speaks volumes about her feelings for him, I think.
