My favourite part as well   Written by Nina RG (3/8/2011 9:53 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Rambling thoughts on the "best of the best" (Longish), penned by jeffrey
Are you new?

Chapter 49 is delicious, and the closest thing we get to actually witnessing a proposal-not-gone-wrong in JA's stories, AFAIK. The walk in the shrubbery is an emotional rollercoaster ride for both of them and thankfully no misunderstandings (or "generosity run mad") ruined their happy moment. I especially love this bit:

What did she say? Just what she ought, of course. A lady always does" (49).

I just can't help smiling at that:D

As for the engagement between Jane and Frank - I did NOT see that one coming. On my first read I was so busy shaking my head at Emma because she could not see what was really going on around her, and then I couldn't either! The secret engagement was, for me, the biggest surprise JA had ever given me, and I was awe-struck at the brilliance with which JA had constructed the plot. So well done!

Oh, I love Emma. It's a marvellous novel!
