Thank you, ...   Written by gianni (3/7/2011 4:18 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Miss Bates!!! Miss Bates!!! Miss Bates!!!! :-), penned by Reeba
Are you new?

...BarbaraB and Stephanie for expressing very well the point of view (regarding Mr. Knightley and Miss Bates) I've been sitting for some time on my hands to keep to myself. You've done better than I could have.

Regarding Emma's reflection, I see much more than just "visiting" faulted in her "not contributing what she ought to the stock of their scanty comforts." I recall just one stated instance of Emma's material contribution to the Bateses' comfort; while I don't see any reason to doubt that there were others, I equally don't see any reason to believe either that they were properly frequent, or that Emma's rare self-doubt in their regard shouldn't include material comforts, especially when I read the complete text as I have quoted it above .

And why should her aversion to Miss Bates be only because of "Jane, Jane, Jane"? It seems clear to me that she objects to Miss Bates's chatter, not her devotion to her niece. And, of course, to the "danger of falling in with the second rate and third rate of Highbury (ch. 19). "
