Perhaps he could have used that as an example or something instead of praising. Putting the positive along with the negative for a more favourable reaction from Emma.

His total blanking of Emma's other kind acts makes the reader concentrate only on the Miss Bates factor as the be all and end all, and Emma's (lack of)social obligations/duties begin to get dimensions that are out of proportion IMO.
In ch:44 Emma feels;

She had been often remiss, her conscience told her so; remiss, perhaps, more in thought than fact;
