I am surprised, although I do not know why, that Miss Bates would be expected to walk to Donwell. She is certainly healthy, and walks to visit friends, but it seems that stalking down miles of country lanes (my image of the distance to Donwell, not to mention the return), would be a bit out of character for her.

But assumptions or no, I can see the implication now that Kathleen Glancy points it out that the Woodhouses alone came in a carriage.
