but there is no evidence that Mr Elton had drunk all that much wine. The narrator says he had only drunk wine enough to elevate his spirits, not at all to confuse his intellect. As for his refusing to recognise "no" when he heard it, from his point of view she has been leading him on for months - maybe he thinks she now wishes to increase his love by suspense, according to the usual practice of elegant females.
