The tendency to pick a desired outcome and see only supporting evidence whilst discounting, ignoring or otherwise turning a blind eye to disconfirming evidence is in fact a well known cognitive bias called confirmation bias- I love that Jane Austen was such an excellent observer that she came up with cognitive psychological concepts before there was cognitive psychology...only now I can't find that great quote from one of the JA novels...

It is along the lines of "once a mind fixes on an idea it calls all circumstacnes to confirm it"
