Mrs. Elton was evidently wanting to be complimented herself   Written by Stephanie (3/2/2011 10:20 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I'm sorta on that same wave length as well...., penned by jeffrey
Are you new?

She may want to do good, but it seems to me the most telling part of that desire is for HER to do good PUBLICLY. She wants to share her largesse, her experience, her leadership, and she wants everyone to know. Really wanting to 'do good' is quite different than really wanting to be known for doing good. Is she ever pleased that some good came to someone that she had no hand in?

I can not imagine her saying, "Did you hear that Hartfield sent a hindquarter of pork to the Bates? I am so pleased that they have something so good -- it was truly thoughtful." But I can easily imagine her saying, "Did you hear I sent our carriage for Miss Bates and Jane Fairfax? We will never neglect THEM, you know. So nice that we have a carriage to send for our friends!"
