... just as enthusiastic to marry a landed gentleman, a military officer of middle to high rank, a judge, or some other socially desirable personage. Just insert whatever that other profession might be for clergyman and her enthusiastic gushings would make just as much sense I think.

She just happened to marry into the church instead of the navy, army, judiciary or landed gentry. It's not that it was her first choice in my opinion.
