It would be very uncharacteristic of Mr Knightley to say anything out of hate and dislike.


Bringing her father into it would be hitting below the belt.
What he said was out of pain and hurt caused by someone he loves....as a friend, I hasten to add, who he has known all her life.

He is adressing Emma's *serious spirit* which will guide her, and make her see the right from wrong using her own abilities. That's what he believes in, as we see in CH: 38;

"Not your vain spirit, but your serious spirit. If one leads you wrong, I am sure the other tells you of it."
