though from hurt pride and thwarted ambition rather than rejected love. There is nothing to suggest that she was. Mr Elton is a handsome man with a comfortable income, Mrs Elton is not such an heiress or a such beauty that she will be beset by suitors, and she wants the status and security that marriage will bring. These are reasons enough for them to marry, and they both seem happy enough with the bargain.
