... and yet I have always felt that Ch38 prepares the ground in some way. For the readers, that is; I don't think Emma has definite romantic feelings as yet. It's a more vague situation. But she does notice his natural grace and the nobleness of his conduct. She does realise how superior he is in more ways than one.

Of course I had settled it ever since I read Ch1 for the first time, but the girl is oblivious. I assume it has something to do with his being a childhood friend.
