at the Crown Inn in chap 38, Mrs Elton was still the queen, and had to be asked to open the ball by Mr Weston. To have to "submit to stand second to Mrs Elton, though she [Emma] had always considered the ball as peculiarly for her. It was almost enough to make her think of marrying."!
