I doubt that Mrs. Elton spends much of her time with Jane Fairfax listening to concerns of people more highly placed than Mrs. Elton's own connections. Every reference must lead back to, "Oh, yes, in Maple Grove we knew someone like that..."

I truly do not think Emma poses probing questions that evening at Hartfield, nor do I think Jane Fairfax is obviously cold in her responses, or Mr. Knightley would notice it, and he does not.
