You are quite right in that Mrs E's "horror of finery" is just vulgar indirect boasting... and her lack of superior knowledge is shown in her remarks about thte Garden of England. Emma says that many counties are given that name, and Mrs E refuses to accept this. Emma very sensibly refuses to get inot a discussion with her on it...
